Alef , is the first letter in the Arabic alphabet . The shape you see on the right is the classical shape of the letter . The alef , however is usually written as a vertical line " ا " . on the top of the hamzeh as you think of a vowel in English . it's position , whether above or under the alef , determines pronunciation . above have the sound a and under have the sound i 

Writing the Aleph is easy; it’s just a straight line ا

Notice that the Aleph cannot connect to the letter after it
There will be a small gap between the Aleph and the next letter
