How to ask questions in Arabic part 5

Interrogative Pronouns : How many / How much


There is only one word to express these things in Arabic, kam كَمْ . This word was originally ka-maa كَمَاْ = "like what?" before it evolved to the form known today.

The nouns after kam must be always singular .

Examples :

how many children do you have?= kam waladan ladayk = كَمْ وَلَدًا لَدَيْكَ ؟

how many times have I warned you? = kam marah hadhartuka = كَمْ مَرَّةَ حَذَّرْتُكَ

do you know how many hours I've been waiting for you?! = hal ta’lam kam sa’ah intadhartuk = هَلْ تَعْلَمُ كَمْ سَاْعَةً اِنْتَظَرْتُكَ The

noun following kam can be omitted.

Examples:

how much/many do you want? = kam turid = كَمْ تُرِيْدُ ؟

how many are these?= kam haa’ula = كَمْ هَؤُلاءِ ؟

When asking about price, kam will be preceded by preposition bi- بِ

The noun following bi-kam is often omitted.

Examples:

how much are these shoes?= bikam hadha al hidha = بِكَمْ هَذَاْ الْحِذَاْءُ ؟

how much is the hamburger?= bikam al humburger = بِكَمِ الْهَاْمْبرْغَرُ ؟
